Fresh from winning the Formula 2 title in Abu Dhabi, Pourchaire travelled to Japan for his first taste of Super Formula with Team Impul during the opening day of this week’s three-day test on Wednesday. At the same time, Red Bull junior Ayumu Iwasa drove the #15 Team Mugen car vacated by Liam Lawson for the first time in anger.
Pourchaire, who is hoping to use Super Formula as his final stepping stone to F1 in Lawson-type fashion, was 16th-fastest, 1.351 seconds off the pace set by Sho Tsuboi for TOM’S. Iwasa meanwhile was the best of the five rookies in action on the opening day, ending up seventh-fastest with a time only 0.327s away from Tsuboi’s benchmark.
